IH Shoreline Evolution Tools
(IH-SET)

A multi-model framework for mid-to-long term shoreline modeling.

Background

The IH-SET (Shoreline Evolution Tools) project was developed by the Coastal Engineering and Management (CEM) group at the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of Cantabria (IHCantabria) under the Programa de Ciencias Marinas (PCM) as part of the ThinkInAzul programme. It is supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and funded through the European Union’s NextGeneration EU (PRTR-C17.I1) and the Community of Cantabria.

Mission

IH-SET is a versatile, user-friendly, open-source tool designed for mid-to-long term shoreline modeling. The suite includes static and dynamic equilibrium, hybrid, and machine learning models.

Versatile
  • The inherent complexity of coastal systems often requires the application of multiple specialized models to ensure a more comprehensive understanding and effective analysis and forecast of shoreline position
  • IH-SET provides a unified interface to apply models that were developed independently, creating an integrated framework to facilitate intuitive comparison and communication.
  • Designed to be flexible, IH-SET enables researchers and engineers to model shoreline evolution anywhere in the world, across a variety of spatial and temporal scales to suit a wide range of research objectives.
User-friendly
  • The unified and versatile nature of IH-SET streamlines its application, enhancing its accessibility and usability for coastal engineering and management projects.
  • The intuitive interface is accompanied by extensive documentation and concise metadata descriptions, ensuring clarity and ease of use.
  • With these resources at your disposal, IH-SET serves as an efficient tool for informed decision-making in coastal protection planning and sustainable coastal management.
Open-source
  • As an open-source initiative, IH-SET fosters collaboration between users, researchers and the CEM team of experts.
  • This collaborative framework supports the development of a network of coastal engineering scientists specializing in beach morphodynamics, with the shared goal of continuously advancing coastal modeling tools.
  • Ultimately, by welcoming user feedback and collaboration, IH-SET can continue to evolve and achieve its overall mission.
